Guide: How Tall Should Your Cane Be?
If you're unsure about the ideal height for your cane, you can easily find the right measurements at home. As a general rule, the correct cane length is about half your total height, but the most accurate measurement can be obtained by measuring from your wrist to the floor as explained below:
- Stand upright with relaxed shoulders and arms by your sides, preferably wearing shoes.
- Have someone measure the distance from the floor to your wrist. This distance is the correct length of your cane from the floor to the top of the handle. It doesn't need to be precise to the centimeter but should not deviate by more than +/- 2 cm.
How to Shorten the Cane
Use the guide above to determine the correct height. Remove the rubber tip and shorten the cane with a saw to achieve the desired length. Finally, reattach the rubber tip, and the cane is ready for use.
